New York City officials are pushing forward several transformative housing projects in Queens, signaling a new wave of residential development across the borough. Mayor Eric Adams announced that developers Cirrus and LCOR have been selected to redevelop the long-dormant Flushing Airport site into 3,000 housing units alongside 60 acres of public open space. Part of the site is deed-restricted and may also house a new NYPD precinct.
Simultaneously, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards recommended approval of a major rezoning in Long Island City, potentially unlocking 14,700 additional residential units over the next decade. The proposal still requires review by the City Planning Commission and the City Council but is expected to be a centerpiece in the city’s broader housing initiative.
More activity is expected at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, where the state plans to deliver 2,800 homes on 58 acres of publicly owned land. The project will be developed in phases following an upcoming request for proposals. Meanwhile, construction is already underway at Willets Point, with 2,500 affordable housing units planned in the project's first phase.
Altogether, these developments could bring over 20,000 new homes to Queens in the coming years, reflecting the city’s renewed focus on expanding housing supply and tackling affordability issues in one of the city’s most rapidly evolving boroughs.
