Controversial multifamily landlord Steve Croman is facing six new foreclosure lawsuits in Manhattan. Delaware Trust Company filed the suits on behalf of Capital One, which issued $30.9 million in loans to Croman-affiliated entities between 2013 and 2016. The lawsuits cite failures to maintain insurance and pay water and sewage bills as the cause of default.
The affected properties span multiple neighborhoods, including Hell’s Kitchen, the East Village, Kips Bay, and Alphabet City, with loan principals totaling approximately $23.9 million.
Croman, a convicted landlord who served prison time in 2017 and paid $8 million in restitution, continues to struggle with his real estate empire. Earlier this year, he faced additional foreclosure attempts and a $900,000 lawsuit for unpaid office rent. Tenant advocates say living conditions in his buildings remain poor, and claim his post-prison behavior shows no signs of reform.
